I’m blessed with another opportunity to cover an artist that I’ve gained appreciation for in my musical journey. When my favourite band in Khruangbin did a collab record with the son of a legendary Malian artist, I was intrigued. What came out of “Ali” was a perfect mix of styles of the Texas trio.
The location: Troxy. Located near Limehouse, I nearly bottled getting there because I thought it was at KOKO. But lucky I double checked on the train ride over! Troxy is a beautiful venue. I’ve only been there one time before and that was to see Yasiin Bey a couple of years ago.
Whether you’re on the ground floor or up in the balcony, the experience is top tier wherever you’re at.
For your boy, it was right at the front.
We begin with the TC & The Groove Family who I’ve had a couple chances to see live in years past but for one reason or another I missed them. Led by drummer TC, this is a nine-piece band that goes many places sonically with a Jazz foundation.
This is the first time in a while that I prefer the colour photos I got this night than the Black & White.
But maybe I’m wrong. You tell me…
I love the moments of dance for some of the members during solos. That’s where the best stuff came.
And now for the Monochromes!
But we’re not done yet! After getting kicked out of the pit. I started to explore. I went in the middle of the crowd, the left of them, the right of them, the balcony where the seats were and even on the side of the stage.
The latter are where my favourite shots of the night come from…
It was a fun night full of energy and excellent musicianship.
But to finish, something that I rarely do but I want to get in the habit of doing: Taking pictures of the audience. I don’t have many here but it’s me showing intent.
