For this post we head to Peckham for a show that is a natural progression from last year's Brassworks Finale that I hit in Woolwich.
I look back at that day fondly and when I saw that two elements of what made that day memorable were coming together at Peckham Levels, I had to get in on it.
I got there early according to doorman Yusuf – who we'll meet later – so I decided to briefly explore Peckham.
Something that makes this show coverage different than all the others I have done is that from here on in, will be in Monochrome.
The setting was right up my alley: intimate and with the stage in the middle of the space, meant that I could experiment with angles.
And boy did I.
We first begin with NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) who are: an organisation dedicated to making jazz and creative music-making more accessible to early-career musicians, young people, and audiences across the country.
And as someone who's into Jazz, an org like this is something I wholly support.
And along with them was Tuba maestro Theon Cross. I will say that my photos of him at Brassworks are way better but I made it work with the lack of lighting that was on him.
I knew that I needed to get more shots of Theon but as I was literally about to change lens, the set ended! "Well shit…" I said.
They did have a jam session with other musicians which was cool, so I thought I’d capture some shots of the people and other musicians before I left.
Shout out to Taylor who I chopped it up with last year and you can see above showing his pictures to the drummer.
I left feeling great. The music was great, the vibe amongst the crowd was excellent and I got some shots that’ll stick with me for a while.
I took the elevator back down and caught Yusuf on his ones, playing online Chess on his phone. I talked to him about his ELO for a bit and asked if he wanted a picture. He accepted
Yusuf.
Until next time, Peckham.
