Lakecia Benjamin

@ The Jazz Café

Date Taken: 27th March 2023

Sometimes, there is something about how somebody plays an instrument that sets them apart. At the end of the day, there are only so many combinations for your fingers to be placed and blow simultaneously.

Most instruments used today are hundreds of years old, but yet we still have artists that make it sound like it dropped recently.

That’s how I felt as I was watching Saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, one of the hottest talents in the US right now.

Phoenix

This tour comes off the back of her '23 release “Phoenix” that flexes features from Diane Reeves, Angela Davis, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sonia Sanchez; my Queen Patrice Rushen and the late, great Wayne Shorter.

But before we get into my set of Ms Benjamin and her band, one time for the support who I cannot for the life of me find their names. They did shout them out at the end but they literally had to shout them because they didn’t have a mic.

Also shouts to the dude just in front of me who was drawing as the shows were going. I managed to get a solid pic of him in flow.

Okay now onto the main course. Big shout out to the string player who was pulling the best faces as the show went on. Dude was FEELING IT.

You know those damn mics were jamming me up tons. But I think I made it work for the set I’ve provided. Very happy with the set and will continue to follow Lakecia on her music endeavours from here on in.
