When I tell you I couldn't wait to get this one out… I'm typing these words at 1am and the heat I have for you… But I of course have some words to get out before the main course.
I said after this show on Twitter that this was my favourite show this year so far. Now, Lady Blackbird will have something to say about that, they're joint 1st, but this meant a lot.
Because not only was I blessed with the presence of Hempress Sativa & The Unconquerebels, (great names) not only was it in The Jazz Café, the best place on Earth, but I got to do it all with brother D. It was his first time in The Jazz Café and after years of me gassing it as a venue, he had a great time.
I will always say, if you want to do something and you have nobody to do it with, do it anyway. But of course it's better doing something with somebody.
Alright, let's get into it:
Jamaican, Rastafari, Contemporary Roots Reggae artist and self-proclaimed “Lyrical Machine”. She’s been a recent discovery for me personally but as soon as I spun her work, I felt like I spun her before. It just feels good and right listening to her.
Her stage presence is powerful. From the messaging in the music to this particular photo where she’s staring directly at me. This is probably Top 5 favourite photos I’ve ever taken.
And it’s photos like these is why I love The Jazz Café so much. Their lighting is amazing a majority of the time and the space itself is extremely intimate. You can’t have an experience like this in The o2 Arena.
I’ll finish with the main set, but special shout to The Unconquerebels who really gave the entire show a fresh take to the original work.
I always feel bad in hindsight when I get pictures of bands because there’s always one I don’t get cleanly. But shouts to the drummer. Gave love after the show.
Shout to homegirl that was in front of me here. She came through with her hair stacked gracefully; it was her birthday and Hempress Sativa gave her love in that special brand black women can give to other black women. A wonderful moment.
But at the end of the day, Hempress Sativa… A one-of-one…
By the way, this was all taken using Eterna v3, go peep that recipe if you like the look.
