Global Soul Showcase

@ The Jazz Café

Date Taken: 2nd July 2023

Recipes Used:

I was actually close to not hitting this event but in hindsight, I'm glad I went. This was one of those events where I knew a majority of the artists – and like them – but to the point where I'd see them on their own?

It's why showcases such as these or the Sekito Records Showcase I hit late last year are so great. The bang-for-buck is so stupidly in the buyer's favour.

Global Soul

Big respect to the people at Global Soul, who do a ton of great work to provide platforms for independent artists.

Pictured is the host of the showcase Victoria Jane who is not only a singer herself, but host of BBC Radio 1's “Future Soul”.

And before I get into the artists in order, big up to the band who were on point all night.

Now to the artists! Beginning with an artist from Wolverhampton.

Benny

Atlas

This guy loves to sing love songs. He was the only artist I wasn’t aware of before the show, so it was an enjoyable first experience.

After a solid opening from Benny Atlas, came a flurry of uniquely talented women…

Shaé

Universe

Universe is a dual threat. You want singing? She’s got it. You want rapping? She’s got it.

Whilst her material is firmly in the R&B camp, the way she goes about it is something not many are doing right now. It’s even more apparent when she hops on tracks as a feature. You never know where she’s going to go next.

Next, a duo from Nottingham where if you’re still sad that VanJess broke up, these two have picked up the “fire R&B duo” torch.

This is Melonyx.

I remember listening to their EP “Black Elixir” in 2021 and have been a fan since. I hope their album adds onto the potential these two clearly have. Their harmony is super clean.

Next was my personal favourite coming in.

IYAMAH

I adore IYAMAH. I only discovered her last year with her EP "Sometimes, I'm Speechless" which was so good that I put the project on my End Of Year EP list.

The live performance was very passionate, filled with energy and I for one am really looking forward to the new tunes she tried out during her set.

The last act obviously got the biggest pop coming out to the stage, and no wonder.

Jaz

Karis

This was another artist I gained awareness of in '22 with an EP release.

But Jaz Karis been going for a while now and to see at a glance how long she’s been going and to see this organic growth is highly respectable. Her style is very affable and easy to embrace as a listener.

And that’s the set! Really glad I saw these artists live. Please give them a spin if you’re looking for some fresh UK R&B.

I leave you with this sick moon shot I got when I left.
