Wolfgang Valbrun

@ The Forge

Date Taken: 30th May 2024

It’s not every day I interview someone for “What’s Good?” and then in the same month get to see them live! But that was the opportunity I was blessed with here.

Mid-May I got to know singer-songwriter Wolfgang Valbrun – (His real name!) I linked the episode in the paragraph above – safe to say, he has a fascinating story and this event really felt like a moment for him.

Around the same time as this show that I'm covering, his debut solo album "Flawed By Design" dropped, a couple hours after the show ended in fact. Obviously worth saying go spin it, really nice piece of work.

I must say that this is one of the most balanced shoots I've done for a show. I got great shots of everyone involved with a healthy balance of colour and monochrome. The lighting was consistent as well, didn't move if at all.

So let's go through the band one by one! Fun fact: everyone involved had a hand in creating Wolfgang's album! So when I tell you the show was as seamless as can be, that is why. They're clearly a close-knit set of musicians.

Rhii

Williams

Drummer

Barring Wolfgang, the most expressive out of the bunch – which makes sense considering how active drumming is – but was fun having the lens focused on her.

James

Graham

Keys

Hailed as one of the key members of the project, Graham was the only band member to be on stage with Wolfgang from start to finish.

Lemaitre

&

McLean-Brown

Sax/Trumpet

Saxophonist Thierry Lemaitre & Trumpeter Damian McLean-Brown are next. Great moments throughout as a duo but Lemaitre blew me away with a couple solo passages. Great players with great chemistry.

Adam

Holgate

Guitar

I can’t lie, I was rating Holgate’s fit. The shoes especially were crispy I just had to get a full body shot just to show love to the aesthetics.

His playing was on par with the fit, very impressive throughout and the light bounced off the guitar a couple times which made for some good photography.

Charlie

Fitzgerald

Guitar

Listed as the producer on all of the album cuts, it wasn’t obvious at first since he was at the back chilling that he was one of, if not the most important of the bunch but once he and Holgate swapped places for a bit, it was much clearer to me.

Wolfgang

Valbrun

Singer/Songwriter

And now for the main man who ended the night in a puddle of sweat.

I’ll break this set into a colour set and a monochrome set since I have so many great shots. His performance live is expressive, passionate and gets the crowd into it. I believe these photos show that.

And now to finish with the monochrome which I think is the better look. I try to find balance with everything but it was really hard to take myself off the mono, I was really liking what I was getting.

Thanks to Lucius Yeo for the opportunity to interview WV & hit the show. Both were great experiences.

Thanks for getting this far into the post. Until the next time…
