Venna @ Islington
Assembly Hall
Assembly Hall
We head back to the Islington Assembly Hall to see one of my favourite musicians of recent years.
Venna is a producer/Saxophonist that has been quietly cooking in the past few years, working with the likes of Knucks and Yussef Dayes. As an enjoyer of the Sax (See: My Lakecia Benjamin post) and Venna's production style, this was a no-brainer show for me to hit.
I've said before that show pictures can be made or broken by the quality of the lighting. This post is definitely better off for the lighting.
Unlike the Makaya McCraven show (linked above) I decided to take my 35mm to the show instead of my trusty 18-55. With that said, the name of the game was focus…
The show kicked off with this beautiful gold tint that went so well with Venna’s “walking through the desert” type gear and his simmering Sax.
I wished that this colour was used more often, but they had different ideas, including this red that was very deep in its hue to the point where whenever it went red, I took the opportunity to go Black & White:
I really loved the Black & White moments for this show, as you’ll see in a bit.
There was also a frequent haze which is easily seen in the colour pictures, like these five:
I love the backlighting with this whole set. The lights rarely meet the subject flush but instead dance around them.
MORE B&W:
Oh yea. Knucks made an appearance which was one of those moments where I was jamming a little too hard. Nearly forgot to get pics!
Loved the purple for this part of the show, goes well with my gradient!
But the best colours in my eyes were the last: this beautiful mix of greens, yellows with a hint of red:
That out-of-focus one I used at the top of the post might be my favourite out of the set.
Either way, I have a feeling that I’ll have a couple shots from this set in my “best of '24” book I like to get at the end of the year.
