“Cycles” Photocall

@ Barbican

Date Taken: 29th April 2024

So this will require a little storytelling (as I do with most of my posts) so strap in!

I’ve been hitting artists and places up in the past couple of months, actively trying to get some Photography passes for things.

One of those places I contacted was (The) Barbican.

And in the same way they came back to me first with an opportunity, that opportunity is the first one that will appear here!

I wasn’t going to get the Photography opportunity at first – instead – I did an interview with BoyBlue’s Co-Founder “Mikey J” Asante.

And then a couple weeks later, I was invited to Barbican again for this! About 30 minutes – a few sections of their routine rehearsed – get what I can!

Here’s what I got of the cast of nine: Jimmy Allan, Nicey Belgrave, Tanaka Bingwa, Gabija Čepelytė, Paris Crossley, Evion Hackett, Kyron “Nykro” Jake, Kelsey “Hydro” Miller & Corey Owens.

I started off with my zoom lens which – compared to the other, clearly more versed photographers – probably looked amateur in their eyes.

And if I’m honest, I wasn’t looking to achieve what they were probably tasked to do via their publications. I just wanted to see what I could get, no expectations.

It’s interesting to me (maybe not to you) that I ended up cropping moments in different ways. I didn’t know what was going to happen at every given time.

But I managed to get the flashy ones.

I only just realised as I’m constructing this, there’s no Black & White in this set. Honestly, I just wanted to take out as many variables as possible.

But I did however switch up to my 35mm lens, got closer to the stage and tried to switch things up!

One thing I wanted to capture as well is the concept of motion. They are dancing after all! I wasn’t bothered if some of the subjects get blurred, it would add to the fact that this was an extremely dynamic show.

It’s clear that once I went to the manual Prime lens, oddly enough I see more character through the photos.

I was invited to see the whole show after and if you get the opportunity to see these guys tour, go for it. I say that as a person who doesn’t hit theatre that much. In fact, this was the first instance of Dance Theatre that I’ve experienced. So if I would pay to see this then I think you should give it a thought.

Appreciate the good people @ Barbican for the free experience building. I’m going to spend a day in the area with my camera. Barbican is an urban beauty.
