Tank and The Bangas

@ The Jazz Café

Date Taken: 27th July 2024

We have another pass, people!

We head back to The Jazz Café (I know, I can’t stay away.) for a show that was end-to-end energy.

Part of a two-performance day, I was put on to see Tank and The Bangas in their evening slot. It was part of a personally eventful day, the prior events will be covered in the next post!

But for now, we get into a night with 0 static and some pictures that were a mission to get. When I tell you the lighting for this show was erratic as hell… The amount of strobe was nuts. But we cook nevertheless and here’s what’s on the plate!

We begin with the support act: BLVK CVSTLE. A duo consisting of California natives Austin Brown and Brian London, the prior I got more of if you’re wondering who is who. And I got a healthy spread of colour & monochrome so I’ll split them.

Another thing about the lighting that is obvious to say now that you’ve seen some of them is the scarce use of them. I personally dig it but it was tough to get clean ones. Some of these are out of focus simply because the lights kept blinking but again, I dig some of the more blurred ones. Adds character!

Onto monochrome!

Now onto the main event!

If you’ve spun my work before, you know I like to highlight the band as much as possible but with the amount of spotlights and not many opportunities to get good shots of the band, I kind of stuck with getting Tank and keeping it moving.

Things started off varied from a visual perspective; I was really enjoying the show itself. Tank has a really good personality for the stage and the musicianship was top tier. They nearly went the whole show without stopping!

There was even a point where Austin Brown came back to helm the keys for the song "Stolen Fruit". A tune by the way.

And just a programming note. I hit these shows partly because I love the artists' work. So if their name is on this site, it's an obligatory recommendation from me. I wrote about their album "Red Balloon" for my End of Year list as well if you want to get more thoughts from me about this group.

Anyway, back to the photos!

Fun fact before the final mini-set: I did bring my zoom lens to this show, partly because this wasn’t my whole day and partly because I thought I would be able to get something different.

NOPE. Not with this amount of selective lighting! There are a couple in here from my zoom lens but after a song I switched back. I needed more than an F2 aperture.

And I know I said that was the final, but I have a surprise.

During the show, there was a painter on my left, creating a fresh piece just for the show. I periodically went to get a shot of the progress.

I thought it’d be fun to show the progress made from the start of the show to the finish. Enjoy!
