@ Reference Point

Date Taken: 11th July 2024

We head to Reference point – a stones throw away from Temple Tube Station – for an event that provoked enjoyment and good vibes for everyone involved.

If you didn't see my previous post, I encourage you to go spin that first for some context but put simply, I'm here to be a witness and more selfishly, keep this release streak I'm on currently.

If you have spun the previous post, you'll know the two people I will highlight in this post. But as always, we begin at the beginning…

Waiting & Watching

I enter the spot to find a spacious area with multiple things going on, still kind of being set up as I enter. So I take the nearest seat and watch things go by.

Shouts to homegirl getting a photo of me with the disposable. I don’t know whether I’ll ever get a look at it but I got her getting me so there’s tangential evidence at least!

Oh, hang about. I see Shari. Shari!

Shari Double-Take 1

Shari Double-Take 2

Very happy I got that 2nd one. Just clocking my call-out but having to doubletake. Love those moments.

We had a quick embrace but she kept things moving. We’ll see her periodically during this set, greeting people and keeping the event moving. I can only imagine the relief at the end of the night when all was said and done.

Call & Response

Got to love conversations scribble above the sink in the toilets!

Self-Portrait (Reference Point)

After hitting the loo and getting the obligatory self-portrait, I kicked up a conversation with a younger brother over a couple games of Jenga. (I lost both but I blame the table shaking.)

This is Christian.

And after taking two Ls, I decided to take a little walk around.

And it was during this period that #FriendOf5E Tayah comes through! Apparently she was in the toilets all this time, before I even arrived!

We chatted outside and inside with other people but it was all quickly running up to her performance. But before that, a little presentation with Shari on Home Radio, the theme of the night: "Remix Is Renovation" and what her goals for the night & beyond were. A quote from her about the theme:

"[Remix Is Renovation] speaks to the art of collage, the art of sampling in genres such as hip hop and jungle, and also how this can be translated into the way cities are built and urban planning is carried out."

Shari – if you’re reading this – I still want to see that Hip-Hop presentation you did!

Anyways, on comes Tayah for a quick set.

But that was just light work. The performance apparently had hitches according to Tayah but you wouldn’t have known it. T & Shari held things down well from what I could see.

Another performance coming later but we get to the main course where we head out to the building foyer to flex the fit that Tayah was rocking. I’m extremely happy about how all of this turned out, so I’m going to stagger it.

We begin in front of an elevator, firstly in colour…

The fit definitely fire but I’m really into the colours here. Really accentuating Tayah’s skin in conjunction with the wood frame around the elevator.

Now to some monochrome!

I made a joke in the middle there, hence her reaction. Still a good photo in my eyes! I enjoy the ones that could be considered ‘outtakes’.

Soon after, some other attendees wanted to show Tayah some love.

And we now get to my favourite part. We moved to a hallway that preceded the toilets to get some different shots.

And boy are they different…

These are some of my favourite shots ever. The only issue I have is that I won’t be able to have all 15 in my End of Year book.

She also rated them as highly as I do, which is always a bonus.

Now to the other performance I covered: Gabriel Dedji And Friends.

Amongst everything there were boardgames to play, documentaries playing on the walls and pictured next, some collaging!

Three more mini sets left. Two highlighting Shari and her people. The first was in the foyer where she was briefly on her ones and then got mobbed. She didn’t seem to mind.

Next was some fire shots I got of her in front of a spotlight. Really love these ones even if the majority are out of focus. Think it adds to the movement of the moment…

I unfortunately had to dip soon after because my route home was being threatened and I got anxious. In hindsight I was good but better to be cautious and home than stranded in the city!

Here’s some leftover shots from the night.

I look forward to the next one!
